Srinagar, July 16: Member of Parliament and National Conference leader Aga Ruhullah on Tuesday alleged that Police have arrested several youths for raising slogans in favour of the people of Palestine and carrying Palestine flag in a Muharram procession in Srinagar.
However, Jammu and Kashmir Police are yet to confirm the arrests.
Thousands of Shia mourners on Monday took out a procession from the centre of Srinagar city to commemorate the eighth day of the holy month of Muharram during which they raised pro-Palestine slogans.
The procession from Guru Bazar to Dalgate in Srinagar which concluded peacefully was banned since the outbreak of militancy over three decades ago and the J&K administration lifted the ban only last year.
A day after the Muharram procession Srinagar MP took to social media demanding the release of these men allegedly arrested by police.
“The JK police has arrested several youths for raising slogans in favour of the people of Palestine and carrying the Palestine flag in a Moharram procession yesterday in Srinagar. This is an assault on freedom of expression and that too an expression in favour of the oppressed people. As conveyed through telephonic conversation, the Police should release these men and avoid treating them as criminals,” Ruhullah posted on X.–(UNI)
