‘Year of Academic Excellence’ Drive Uncovers Gaps in Hariganiwan Schools; 15-Day Deadline Issued

Ganderbal:- In line with the initiative of the Director School Education Kashmir, who has designated the current year as the “Year of Academic Excellence,” a series of inspections were carried out across schools in the Hariganiwan zone to assess academic standards and institutional functioning.

The inspections, conducted by the Office of the Zonal Education Officer (ZEO) Hariganiwan, including a surprise visit along with the Chief Education Officer Ganderbal, have revealed serious academic deficiencies across multiple schools, prompting authorities to issue strict directions and a 15-day deadline for improvement.

The inspection drives, held on April 27 and May 5, 2026, covered institutions including MS Mandal Mohalla, MS Haknar, MS Rayil, MS G.P Rayil, and PS Rayil Khour.

The inspections highlighted that the overall academic level of students in several schools was poor, with major gaps in foundational concepts, particularly in Mathematics. Students were found struggling with basic numeracy skills, problem-solving abilities, and conceptual understanding under Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) benchmarks.

In several cases, teachers were observed marking mistakes in students’ notebooks but failing to ensure corrections, indicating weak academic monitoring and follow-up. Classroom engagement and conceptual clarity were also found lacking, necessitating structured remedial interventions.

Among the institutions, MS Rayil recorded poor performance, while MS G.P Rayil was assessed as average, with students partially meeting FLN targets but still requiring improvement in basic mathematical concepts.

In contrast, PS Rayil Khour showed comparatively better performance, with most students meeting expected learning outcomes. However, Urdu reading skills were found below the desired level, and authorities directed the school to focus on strengthening language literacy, particularly reading and writing skills.

The inspections also revealed administrative lapses, including improper maintenance of statistical registers in some schools, contrary to prescribed norms. However, Mid-Day Meal arrangements and hygiene standards were generally found satisfactory, with certain schools maintaining a clean and conducive learning environment.

Authorities have directed all Heads of Institutions (HOIs) to take immediate corrective measures, including strengthening foundational teaching, conducting remedial classes, adopting competency-based teaching strategies, and ensuring proper maintenance of academic records.

The concerned schools have been given 15 days to demonstrate visible improvement in the identified areas, failing which strict action will be taken as per rules.

In a stern warning, it has also been ordered that no increments shall be sanctioned for the concerned staff until satisfactory progress is achieved.

The findings conclude that the overall performance of several schools in the Hariganiwan zone remains unsatisfactory, highlighting the urgent need for focused intervention under the “Year of Academic Excellence” initiative.

Copies of the inspection reports have been forwarded to the Chief Education Officer Ganderbal for further monitoring and necessary action.
