Srinagar, June 9(KNS): National Conference MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi on Tuesday said he would participate in his party’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, while asserting that the larger political demand for Jammu and Kashmir remains the restoration of Article 370.
Speaking to reporters in Pulwama, Ruhullah said he would “definitely” be part of the protest but maintained that the political struggle should not be limited to a single demonstration or focused solely on the restoration of statehood.
He said the movement must be sustained and organised, arguing that the demand should also include the restoration of constitutional safeguards that existed before August 2019.
The MP said a one-day protest alone would not address the aspirations and concerns of the people, stressing the need for a broader political campaign centred on rights, protections and democratic guarantees.
Referring to challenges faced by the younger generation in the years following the abrogation of Article 370, Ruhullah said justice was necessary for ensuring long-term peace and stability in the region
He also raised concerns over land ownership, employment opportunities and reservation policies, alleging that local residents were increasingly being denied their rightful share. Citing examples from different areas, including Pulwama, he said restrictions affecting agriculture and livelihoods had added to public grievances.
Ruhullah further said several political and administrative assurances made to the people remained unfulfilled. While better governance could help reduce discontent, he said unresolved political issues continued to contribute to public dissatisfaction.
Reiterating his position, the MP said lasting peace in Jammu and Kashmir could only be achieved through justice and meaningful political engagement rather than symbolic measures alone.(KNS)
