Kangan : The construction of a massive Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) structure at Satrina in Kangan area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district has raised serious questions over the enforcement of construction restrictions along the Srinagar–Leh National Highway and regulations governing construction along the banks of Nallah Sindh.
The structure is reportedly coming up within the restricted 100-metre zone along the Srinagar–Leh National Highway, where construction is said to be prohibited under government-imposed restrictions. Its proximity to Nallah Sindh has also raised concerns over compliance with applicable regulations governing construction along the waterbody’s banks.
The development has triggered questions about how such a massive structure is being raised despite the reported restrictions, and whether the requisite permissions and approvals have been obtained from the concerned departments.
The issue has also raised concerns over the alleged disparity in the enforcement of regulations, with locals questioning why a massive concrete structure is being constructed at the location while economically weaker residents reportedly face restrictions even when attempting to erect small tin sheds in the same area.
Speaking on the matter, Executive Engineer of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Ganderbal, Er. Nasir Wani, said that the department would not tolerate any violation along the banks of Nallah Sindh.
“We will not tolerate any violation along the banks of Nallah Sindh. I have deputed a team to the location, which will stop the ongoing work, and further action will be taken as warranted,” Wani said.
Meanwhile, attempts to obtain a response from the concerned Revenue Department officials remained unsuccessful, as they did not respond to repeated calls regarding the matter.
