Srinagar: A day after a teacher couple was sacked by the Muslim Educational Institute (MEI), Pampore, for their marriage, the government has taken up the issue with the school management.
Education Minister Syed Altaf Bukhari on Friday told Kashmir Reader that the teachers would be retained in the school as they have not committed any wrong. “Director education has taken up the matter with the school management. By now the issue must have been resolved if there is no other complaint against the couple except for what was reported in the newspapers,” he said.
Tariq Ahmad and his wife Sumaya Tariq, both residents of Arigam, Tral, were teaching in the same school but in two different wings: Tariq in the boys’ wing and Sumaya in the wing for girls. They got married and the school’s principal had called Tariq on his wedding day, informing him that he has been sacked for marrying his colleague.
“What is wrong even if they loved each other? They performed Nikkah and their wedding was solemnised by their parents,” Bukhari said
