Srinagar: Ahead of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat’s death anniversaries, security has been beefed up in northern part of Kashmir, sources said.
Check points by police and army have been raised at various places in Sopore, Baramulla, Handwara and Kupwara areas, local sources said.
They said that frisking of commuters and vehicles has been started at various places. Even some roads in Sopore have been closed by raising wires and barricades by government forces.
JKLF founder, Bhat, a resident of Trehgam in Kupwara was hanged in Tihar jail, Delhi on February 11, 1984 while as the parliament attack convict Guru, a resident of Boabgah, Sopore met the same fate in Tihar on February 9, 2013. Bodies of both of them were not returned to their relatives and were buried in the same jail.
Pro-freedom leaders have already announced a protest programme for Feb 9 and 11, including complete shutdown.
