Srinagar 27 Oct : A final-year engineering student from Kashmir was attacked by some persons with a knife at his rented accommodation in Chandigarh on Friday night.
The student has been identified as Musbashir of Balhama Srinagar.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, Mubashir said he was attacked by more than seven students during late hours when he was sleeping with his roommates at his flat outside the college.
“A group of more than six persons barged inside, three were masked and all were carrying iron rods and knives with them,” he said, adding that he was beaten before he could react.
“As they entered inside my room, they started beating me and hit my legs and arms with iron rods,” he said.
Mubashir said he was immediately taken to Suhana hospital, Mohali for treatment.
“Later, these students called me and said they had some misunderstanding and attacked me mistakenly,” he said. “But if it was misunderstanding then they should have given me a chance to speak to them before they attacked me.”
He said they have lodged a complaint at the local police station, but complained that the college authorities were not taking the issue “seriously.”
“We approached the college administration with the complaint but they give a cold response,” Mubashir said, adding that they have been called by local police station regarding their complaint.
Meanwhile, uncle of Mubashir, Zahoor Ahmad expressed anguish and questioned about the safety of the Kashmiri students outside J&K state.
“J&K police authorities should take cognizance of this incident and take steps to safeguard the Kashmiri students outside,” he said.
Zahoor Ahmad has also approached the divisional administration with his grievance. “I met divisional commissioner who wrote a letter to college authorities in Chandigarh to take appropriate action into this incident,” he said and appealed director general of Police (DGP) J&K to intervene into the matter.
“Our family is disturbed, government should ensure safety of students pursuing various courses outside J&K state colleges and universities,” he said.
The administrator of the college, Anoop said the incident happened in the evening at rented residence of the college student which is 10 kilometers away from the campus.
“It didn’t happen inside campus. We were not aware that it is going to happen. I was informed today morning about it by the students. They also identified some students who attacked Mubashir,” he said, adding that the identified students will be called on Monday and action will be taken accordingly.(GK)
