Residents Say Danger Of Disease Outbreak ‘Imminent’, Urge Authorities To Act With ‘Promptitude’
Srinagar, April 3 (GNS): Residents of Umer Colony-A area of Lal Bazar locality here are grappling with inundation due to filthy water entering their houses from clogged drainage in their area.
According to the residents, the water level in an adjacent nallah has also risen due to “illegal” earth filling done around in the vicinity which adds to their “woes”.
They accused authorities including J&K Lake Conservation and Management Authority (previously LAWDA) of acting like a mute spectator in not unclogging drainage and also allowing the earth filling which according to them has caused great degree of “agony” to them.
“The dirty water have entered the compounds of houses and the water level is raising day by day and there is every threat of damage to the houses,”the locals of Lane No 5, Umer Colony A, Lal Bazar Srinagar, told GNS.
The drainage and nallah, they said, pass from the backside of their houses and due to the blockage of drain, the grimy and filthy water enters residential houses.
“The illegal earth filling around nallah has also affected the natural drainage system and it has in turn awfully affected our peaceful living,” they said, adding, “the summer months are ahead and there is bound to be diseases due to the contaminated and dirty water. Already the foul smell emanating from the water is nauseating.”
They also alleged that their resort to online complaints mechanisms have not yielded any results so far.
“We submitted complaints even to much-talked about J&K grievance cell but to no avail,” the local residents said and urged the authorities to act with “promptitude” so that their peaceful living is not disrupted any further.
“The authorities must act with promptitude so as to save us from nuisance due to the inundation and lurking danger of diseases,” they said, “We are made to bear the brunt for the failure of the authorities.” (GNS)
