Srinagar, Oct 13 : A deserted Territorial Army Soldier turned-militant has been killed in an ongoing encounter at Babagund village of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district during pre dawn hours today.
Official sources told GNS said that a joint team of army, SOG and CRPF had laid an ambush following a tip off about the presence of some militants in the area.
“The militants entered the ambushed area, they were challenged after which a fierce gun battle took place between the forces and the militants in which one militant has been killed”.
They said that two more militants are believed to be trapped in the area.
SSP Pulwama Chandan Kholi also confirmed that one militant has been killed in an ongoing encounter at Babagund area.
“The army’s 55 RR party was going through the area in a Casper vehicle when it was fired upon by the militants,” SSP said.
He said that soon after the attack the whole area was cordoned off along with the additional reinforcements of security forces.
In the mean time, the contact was established with the hiding militants resulting into the killing of one militant so far, he said, adding that the operation is underway.
The slain militant according to sources is that of the deserted army man Zahoor Ahmad Thoker.
Zahoor, a resident of Sirnoo village of Pulwama district, was reported absconding since July 5, 2017 by the army unit located in Gantmulla area of Baramulla.
He was in the Engineering wing of 173 Battalion of the Territorial Army.
Meanwhile, in wake of the operation, the authorities have snapped the internet services in the southern district. (GNS)
