Drug addiction, peddling has become nuisance in area, women unable to move out from homes: Locals

Pulwama, Aug 20 (KNO): A local drug addict person has allegedly damaged two houses in Naina Batpora village of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
Two brothers namely Nazir Ahmad Bhat and Zahoor Ahmad Bhat sons of Ghulam Qadir Bhat resident of Naina Batpora while talking with news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) alleged that a drug addict who is resident of nearby village damaged the mirrors and window panes of their houses and has also looted gold and other valuable items worth lakhs.
They alleged that the drug addict also abused and attacked them but nobody dared to take any action against him.
Javaid Ahmad, the duos elder brother also alleged that the said drug addict attacked the houses of his brothers thrice on Thursday and was once caught by police as well, however, he was later released.
He said that both his sister- in- laws are pregnant and despite attacking their houses in dead of night no action has been taken against him.
The locals on Friday blocked Chakoora-Sangam road and were demanding his immediate arrest and compensation of the damage property.
The protestors said that drug peddling as well as addiction has become nuisance in their area due to which common people are facing lot of inconveniences.
Shabir Ahmad a senior member of the Auqaf said that around 20 percent of the population including girls is involved in drug peddling and addiction but despite repeated requests to authorities no action is being taken against them.
“Youth from even North and Central Kashmir are coming here to get the drugs. Anytime in day you can find dozens of youth coming here from different areas to get the drugs,” he said.
“Women folk feel insecure. On many occasions, ear rings and other golden items were snatched from the women by these drug addicts when they were lonely at their farm land,” he alleged.
Chastity of our women is at stake while the drug peddling in the area is going on in a board day light,” he said.
Locals alleged that authorities have failed to take any step in this regard to end this menace.
“We request civil administration and police to look into the matter and take immediate steps to curb this menace otherwise we will lose our coming generation to drugs,” they said—(KNO)
