Srinagar, Feb 09 (KS): A high alert has been issued in Kashmir following the attack on two Punjabi workers by terrorists in Srinagar, the summer capital city, on Wednesday evening.
An official told Srinagar based news gathering agency Kashmir Scroll, security has been strengthened throughout Kashmir, with extra surveillance on the highways. Checkpoints have been established at various locations, especially at the entry points of the city and other districts.
He said security forces are conducting random vehicle checks and frisking individuals to thwart any subversive activities.
The official said that authorities have urged security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure that law and order is maintained, preserving peace in the region.
A manhunt is currently underway to apprehend the attackers who targeted the residents of Punjab the official further added.
On Wednesday evening, Amritpal Singh, a 31-year-old from Amritsar, Punjab, was fatally shot by terrorists in the Shaheed Gunj area of Srinagar. His colleague, Rohit, aged 25, sustained severe injuries, and unfortunately succumbed to them at a tertiary care hospital in Srinagar on Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, residents throughout Kashmir Valley have strongly condemned the attack and are calling for decisive action against the terrorists responsible.
Protests and candlelight vigils have been held in various locations across north, south, and central Kashmir, including Shopian, Bandipora, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Kupwara, Kulgam, Anantnag, and Srinagar. (KS)
