Srinagar:Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik was on Tuesday arrested in Srinagar to prevent him from carrying out an election boycott campaign, said a party spokesman.

Reports said that a police party raided the Abi Guzar office of Malik and detained him.

Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik have called a boycott of upcoming civic polls in the state.

A JKLF spokesman said that Malik along with other leaders was planning to start a sustained election boycott campign. “He (Malik) has been arrested for the election boycott call,” said the spokesman.

Municipal elections are scheduled from October 8 in four phases in Jammu and Kashmir.

The JRL has asked people to boycott the elections as they were “just farce and aimed at diluting the basic nature of Kashmir dispute”.
