Kupwara:The Department of Fisheries, Kupwara, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) and the Department of Zoology, Government Degree College Kupwara, celebrated World Fisheries Day with great zeal at the KVK Kupwara campus.

The event was graced by Ayushi Sudan, IAS, Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, as the Chief Guest.

The program drew a large gathering of farmers, students, and stakeholders, reflecting the district’s growing interest in fisheries as a key sector for livelihood and economic growth.

In her keynote address, Ayushi Sudan, IAS, emphasized the importance of sustainable fisheries for rural development and food security. She applauded the collaborative efforts of the Department of Fisheries, KVK, and GDC Kupwara for organizing such an informative event and encouraged farmers to adopt modern fish farming techniques to maximize productivity while ensuring ecological balance.

Experts conducted practical sessions showcasing advanced fish farming practices, including biofloc systems, RAS aquaculture, Trout Fish Farming etc. These demonstrations aimed to educate farmers about cost-effective and sustainable techniques to enhance yield.

Audio-Visual Presentations: Engaging videos highlighted the benefits of adopting scientific methods in aquaculture, along with success stories of progressive fish farmers from Kupwara and other regions.

Students from Government Degree College Kupwara and other institutions actively participated in the discussions, showing keen interest in exploring fisheries as a career. Farmers appreciated the opportunity to interact with experts and share their experiences. Many expressed their readiness to implement the insights gained during the program.

The Deputy Commissioner highlighted the various government schemes available for fish farmers, including the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and initiatives under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP). She urged farmers to take advantage of these schemes to modernize their practices and improve their livelihoods.

A book module on Bio Floc Fish Farming authored by Dr. Salman Rauoof Chalkoo , Assistant Director Fisheries District Kupwara, was also launched during the event

The Assistant Director Fisheries , Kupwara, expressed gratitude to all participants and collaborators. He reaffirmed the department’s commitment to supporting farmers through training, technology transfer, and access to financial assistance.

World Fisheries Day 2024 in Kupwara was not just a celebration but a stepping stone towards sustainable fisheries development in the region. With the active involvement of farmers, students, and government officials, the event set a positive tone for the future of aquaculture in the district.
