Baramulla, Jan 08 : The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), New Delhi, has recommended granting in-principle Forest Clearance for the Uri-I Stage-II Hydro Electric Project (240 MW), an NHPC Ltd. initiative in Baramulla district.

The recommendation was made during the Forest Advisory Committee meeting held on December 26, 2024.

The project involves the utilization of 17.00 hectares of underground forest land within the Boniyar and Uri Forest Ranges for the construction of essential components, including a Head Race Tunnel, underground powerhouse, and Tail Race Tunnel.

The project will utilize the existing surface water conveyance systems of the operational Uri-I Power Station, including the barrage, head regulator, and surface water conductor.

Notably, the project will not result in any additional submergence of the reservoir area, ensuring minimal environmental impact.

This proposal has been endorsed by multiple authorities, including the MoEF&CC Regional Office in Chandigarh (Integrated Regional Office, Jammu) on January 25, 2024, and the Government of Jammu & Kashmir on October 13, 2023.

The project was also reviewed by MoEF&CC, New Delhi, on April 30, 2024, with additional details requested at that stage now satisfactorily addressed.

A public hearing was conducted on December 21, 2023, as part of the Environmental Clearance process.

The Expert Appraisal Committee of MoEF&CC discussed the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP) reports, along with public hearing findings, on August 13, 2024, and sought further details for granting Environmental Clearance. This clearance is expected to be granted in the near future.

The Uri-I Stage-II Hydro Electric Project will enhance the region’s energy capacity with a 240 MW output, achieved through two 120 MW turbines.

As an extension of the existing Uri-I Power Station, this project represents a significant step toward sustainable energy development while leveraging existing infrastructure to minimize environmental disruption.

The issuance of the formal in-principle Forest Clearance letter is anticipated shortly, paving the way for this critical infrastructure project.
