Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested a Kashmir based journalist Asif Sultan in Batamaloo related militancy case.

SHO Batamaloo Parvez Ahmad told Kashmir Reader that Asif has been formally arrested in recent incidents that took place in Batamaloo area of Srinagar.

“He has been formally arrested. This is the only detail I have. Further details will be shared by SP South who is investigating the case,” Parvez said.

Sultan was arrested from his home in the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday by a huge contingent of police, Muhammad Sultan, the father of Asif told Kashmir Reader.

“They took him, searched his room, his books, took his laptop and phone,” he added.

Sultan is an assistant editor with monthly magazine Kashmir Narrator.

Asif had recently written a cover story on Burhan Wani, the popular Hizb Commander killed in 2016, whose killing triggered a massive uprising in Kashmir valley, for which he was quizzed.

Showkat Mota, the editor of Kashmir Narrator told Kashmir Reader that police have been telling him that he is being questioned for a story.

“Police have kept him under illegal custody. Why did not they produce him before court in these six days? Why after we made it public,” questions Mora.(KR)
