Baramulla, Dec. 29: A week after the killing of a retired SSP in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, police made a heartening announcement on Friday to encourage justice and peace within the community, especially for the family.

Official sources told Kashmir Despatch that in pursuit of solving a heinous crime, police have offered a substantial reward of Rs 5 lakh to anyone who can provide valuable information leading to the identification and arrest of the culprits involved in the tragic killing of a retired Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Gantamulla.

Talking to Kashmir Despatch, a senior lawyer in the district, said that this noble act reinforces the belief that no act of violence will go unnoticed or unpunished. He said Baramulla Police, with this announcement, is not only seeking justice for the retired SSP and his grieving family but also sending a powerful message that they will not tolerate any act that disrupts the peace and tranquility of their region.

As reported by Kashmir Despatch, the inquiry into the killing of former senior police officer Mohammad Shafi Mir in Baramulla district has pivoted in a different direction as authorities are now exploring multiple angles, including the potential involvement of rivalry.

A top official source revealed to Kashmir Despatch that Mir met his demise on 24 December Sunday morning at the local mosque in Gantmulla village of north Kashmir’s Baramulla.

Mir, a former senior superintendent of police, fell victim to a point-blank shooting, with the assailant employing a 12-bore rifle, and the crime scene indicated the presence of pellets.

A high-ranking police official, while talking to Kashmir Despatch, assured that a comprehensive investigation is in progress, with all pertinent details to be disclosed to the public upon its completion.

Meanwhile, police have reported a significant breakthrough in their investigation into this incident by seizing around 37 12-bore rifles, which were found in the possession of various villagers.

These rifles have been promptly collected and sent to the District Police Lines (DPL) in Baramulla.

A senior police official stated that the next step involves a thorough examination of these rifles by a specialized team. The purpose of this examination is to determine whether any of the seized rifles were utilized in the recent attack.
