SRINAGAR, August 07: Train service remained suspended for the second day today for security reasons, while train will chug in north Kashmir valley after remaining suspended yesterday.
We have suspended all trains between Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region for security reasons, a senior railway official said today.
However, daily passengers who had arrived this morning at Badgam, Srinagar and other south Kashmir stations were disappointed after being informed that train service will remain suspended for the second day today.
Describing the decision to suspend the train service as unfortunate and unjustified, the passengers alleged that railway authorities just wanted to punish the people on the advice of civil and police administration.
The railway official said, “We have taken the decision to suspend train service in the Kashmir valley after receiving an advisory from the administration and police for security reasons”.
A foreign militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in south Kashmir district of Pulwama early this morning.
However, he said, train service has been resumed on Srinagar-Badgam in the central Kashmir to Baramulla in north Kashmir after remaining suspended yesterday for security reasons.
Railway property has suffered massive damage in the past during protests in the valley, where the train services remained suspended for about six months during summer unrest last year.
However, people shuttling daily between north to south Kashmir via Srinagar or vice versa prefer train service which is being considered most dependable, cheap and safe mode of transport in the Kashmir valley, where frequent traffic jam is a daily routine. (AGENCIES)
