Sakina Itoo Defends Doctors After Anantnag Death Row, Warns Against Attacks

Baramulla, April 25, KNT: Jammu and Kashmir Health Minister Sakina Itoo on Saturday defended doctors while responding to allegations of negligence in a patient death at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag, stating that police are investigating the matter and warning against attacks on medical staff.

Speaking to reporters in Baramulla, Itoo said grievances against doctors can be addressed through proper channels but violence cannot be justified.

“If there is any grievance against doctors, you can complain, but you cannot attack them. Doctors are also human beings and they work hard,” she said.

The remarks come after attendants of a patient who died at GMC Anantnag alleged negligence by doctors, triggering controversy and police intervention.

Itoo said the government has taken steps to improve healthcare facilities, pointing to upgrades at GMC Anantnag.
“This GMC once had no gate and was a hotbed for dogs. Today it is equipped with facilities including a Cath lab, MRI, and availability of doctors,” she said.

She also alleged that certain elements were attempting to tarnish the image of the government.

“There are elements who are not happy with the performance of the government and are trying to create such situations,” she said.

The minister said action has been taken in cases where doctors were found violating rules.

“We have suspended some doctors against whom complaints were received that they were doing private practice during duty hours,” she added.

Sakina Itoo also announced that a Cath lab facility will soon be established at Baramulla hospital to strengthen healthcare services in the region. . [KNT]
