CBI Arrests Railway Engineer in Assam Bribery Case; Caught Accepting ₹20,000 Bribe

New Delhi, June 14 (KNC): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Senior Section Engineer (SSE) of the Carriage and Wagon (C&W) Department of the Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway in Silchar, Assam, in connection with a bribery case involving the clearance of a contractor’s pending bill.

According to an official CBI press release issued on Saturday, the agency registered the case on June 13, 2026, against the accused officer following allegations that he had demanded illegal gratification for processing a contractor’s payment.

The CBI said that a bill amounting to approximately ₹20 lakh, related to work already executed by the complainant-contractor, was pending for clearance with the accused official. It was alleged that when the contractor approached the Senior Section Engineer on June 12 seeking release of the payment, the officer demanded one per cent of the total pending bill amount as a bribe for clearing the bill.

Acting swiftly on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and allegedly caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹20,000 from the complainant.

Following the operation, the accused railway engineer was arrested and is scheduled to be produced before the competent court in Guwahati on June 14, 2026.

The investigating agency further stated that searches at the residential premises of the accused are currently underway as part of the ongoing investigation.

The CBI said that further investigation into the case is continuing.(KNC)
