Baramulla, Aug 6: In a major crackdown on illegal mining, the Geology and Mining Department, Baramulla, in coordination with Police, conducted an intensive two-day enforcement drive in Babagund, Pattan, and Delina, resulting in the seizure of nine vehicles and a water motor allegedly being used for the unauthorized extraction of minerals.

During the operation, the enforcement teams also challaned illegally extracted mining material in the Babagund Pattan areas. The seized vehicles included those engaged in the illegal transportation of minerals without valid permits, while the water motor was confiscated for its alleged use in unlawful mining activities.

Officials said a total penalty of ₹1.75 lakh was recovered from the violators during the drive, and legal proceedings have been initiated under the relevant provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Minor Mineral Concession, Storage, Transportation of Minerals and Prevention of Illegal Mining Rules.

District Mineral Officer (DMO) Baramulla, Er. Zulfikar Mohd. Shafi, said the department has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against illegal mining and will continue taking strict action against violators. He emphasized that unauthorized extraction of minerals not only causes substantial loss to the government exchequer but also poses a serious threat to river ecosystems, public infrastructure, and the environment.

He further appealed to the public to cooperate with the department by reporting any instances of illegal mining and reiterated that enforcement drives will continue across Baramulla district to protect natural resources, ensure sustainable mining practices, and uphold the rule of law.
