Fisheries Department, Police Remove 20 Illegal Gillnets in Night-Long Operation in Bandipora

BANDIPORA, SEPTEMBER 18: The Department of Fisheries, Bandipora, in coordination with the J&K Police, conducted a night-long enforcement operation from September 17 to 18, leading to the removal of 20 large monofilament gillnets from the waters of Saderkoot Payeen.

Officials said the illegal fishing gear had been pitched beneath the water surface and was recovered during the joint operation.

According to the Fisheries Department, the use of monofilament gillnets poses a threat to fish populations as the gear can indiscriminately trap fish of different sizes and age groups, adversely affecting the sustainability of aquatic resources.

The department said such illegal fishing practices also undermine conservation measures and affect the legitimate fishing rights and livelihoods of Mahigirs who depend on lawful fishing practices.

The Fisheries Department expressed gratitude to SSP Bandipora and J&K Police personnel from Police Post Ajas for their assistance and cooperation during the enforcement drive.

The department reiterated its commitment to protecting aquatic resources and said necessary enforcement measures would continue against the use of prohibited fishing gear in water bodies across the district.
