Srinagar: In a letter, copy of which lies with Greater Kashmir, Mufti submitted his resignation from the post “with immediate effect”.

The resignation comes two days after the government initiated the process to have Tassaduq Mufti, brother of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, nominated as member of the Legislative Council.

On Wednesday, Greater Kashmir reported that the government has sought the cabinet approval to recommend the nomination of Tassaduq as member of the upper house, to Governor NN Vohra.

“The proposal was circulated among the cabinet ministers today. Most of them have given their nod to it,” the source said, adding that the proposal would be sent to Governor within a day or two for his approval.

Following the Governor’s nod, Tassaduq is likely to be inducted into the council of ministers, the source said, adding that as soon as this will happen, a minor ministerial reshuffle is expected to take place wherein the government may induct another minister (other than Tassaduq) after dropping one of the sitting ministers.

Tassaduq returned to the state after his father Mufti Muhammad Sayeed fell ill. He was introduced to the party and politics by his sister Mehbooba after Sayeed passed away in January 2016. He was also the PDP’s candidate for Anantnag parliamentary segment where the election couldn’t be held due to “volatile situation.”

Later, he was appointed as coordinator of Chief Minister’s grievance cell, a platform set-up by the government for redressal of public grievances.

Tassaduq is being recommended against the seat that fell vacant following the resignation of ex-MLC Vikramaditya Singh due to his differences with the party.
