GMC Jammu Nurses Seek Action Against MLA Over Alleged Misconduct in Emergency Ward

JAMMU, May 17 (KNC): Nursing staff of Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu have submitted a representation to the Lieutenant Governor seeking action against Jammu West MLA Arvind Gupta over alleged abusive behaviour and misconduct with healthcare workers inside the Emergency Ward No. 7.

In the representation dated May 15, the nursing associations alleged that during a visit to the hospital on May 14, the MLA used abusive and threatening language against staff members despite the patient having already received proper medical attention from the medical team.

The staff claimed that a nurse respectfully greeted the MLA, but in response, he allegedly shouted and used insulting remarks in the presence of senior officers, patients, attendants and hospital staff, causing humiliation and mental distress among healthcare workers.

The representation further stated that the entire interaction was recorded and later circulated on social media, which, according to the nursing staff, damaged the dignity and morale of healthcare professionals working tirelessly in emergency services.

The nurses also highlighted their role during the COVID-19 pandemic, disaster situations and other emergencies, saying the same emergency unit had handled critical cases and mass trauma incidents with dedication and professionalism.

Demanding immediate intervention, the nursing associations urged authorities to remove the video from social media platforms, initiate appropriate action against those involved and ensure protection of healthcare staff from harassment and political interference inside hospital premises.

The representation also sought a written apology from the concerned MLA and warned that if no action is taken by May 18, the staff may be compelled to launch protests or go on strike in support of the dignity and safety of hospital employees.

Meanwhile, several pages attached with the representation carried signatures of nurses and hospital staff extending support to the memorandum submitted before the administration.(KNC)
