GANDERBAL, SEPTEMBER 12 : A sudden hailstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall caused extensive damage to standing paddy crops across several areas of Ganderbal district, leaving farmers concerned about significant losses at a crucial stage of the agricultural season.

The hailstorm struck parts of the district late last night, affecting paddy fields in Pati Devpora, Malikpora, Kurag, Gogjigund and Sehpora, according to local farmers. The intense hail and rainfall reportedly damaged standing crops that were nearing maturity and harvesting.

Farmers said the sudden weather event has compounded their difficulties, with many fearing substantial losses after investing considerable resources and labour in cultivating the crop.

The affected farming community has urged the district administration and concerned agriculture authorities to undertake an immediate field assessment to ascertain the extent of damage and prepare a comprehensive report.

They have also sought timely compensation and relief under applicable government schemes and crop insurance provisions, stating that financial assistance is urgently required to help affected families recover from the losses.

Several farmers appealed to the authorities to deploy assessment teams to the affected villages at the earliest so that the damage can be properly documented and genuine beneficiaries are provided relief without unnecessary delay.

The farmers also urged the administration to keep a close watch on the weather situation in the coming days, particularly as the paddy crop has reached a critical stage ahead of harvesting.

The affected farmers expressed hope that the authorities would respond promptly to their concerns and take necessary measures to provide relief to those whose crops have been damaged by the hailstorm.(KNC)
